The smell of sweat, a room jam-packed with determined skaters, and a flurry of bright prints whizzing past. It can only mean one thing… Time for the Charity Roller Derby Scrim hosted by the aptly named South West Angels of Terror (SWAT). On the 13th January, we found ourselves in Taunton at the Wellsprings Leisure Centre with skated players from all over the country all fighting to be crowned the Roller Derby queens (and kings). One of the sponsors for SWAT, we had a range of leggings and shorts on our stand and we’re delighted that the distinctive Ruby Fury prints featured heavily throughout the games too.

There were 4 games played throughout the day. Firstly, the rookies took to the court. The captains had their all important meeting, then it’s time for warm ups and the first whistle was blown! Our founder Maria played in the rookie game under her skate alter-ego, Ruby Fury (obviously), in a pair of floral fantasy leggings! Then it was time for the intermediate game, followed by the advanced ladies (beasts!) and finally, a co-ed game where men and women skated for their lives.

The event was in aid of the FreeWheelers, a registered charity providing blood bikes to the NHS in the areas of Somerset, Bristol, Bath, West Wiltshire, and South Gloucestershire.

All in all, both skaters and spectators had a smashing time and the event was hugely successful in raising funds for the charity. We can’t wait until the next one already!

Scrim in action!
Happy rookies after their game.
